The Thuthukile Skweyiya Western Cape Burgundy Wine Exchange programme – so named after its founder, Ms Thuthukile Skweyiya, the then South African ambassador to France – was launched in 2001. The exchange programme operates within a larger Co-operation Agreement which was entered into by the Regional Council of Burgundy and the Western Cape.
Each year ten farm workers from the wine industry are sent on a four week training programme towards a learnership in Viticulture and Oenology and aims at providing vocational training and social upliftment to wine farm workers with no formal qualifications.
The learnership involves classes at the Vineyard Academy which is then followed by formal classes at the Centre de Formation Professionelle et de Promotion Agricole (CFPPA) in Beaune. Once the formal part of the learnership has been completed, learners assist with the harvest on various farms in France over a five week period.
Moira van der Merwe, the bubbly personality which is found in the Bilton tasting room, was selected for the second time in 2010 for this prestigious exchange programme. When asked about her experience, she responds with an enthusiastic “It was fantastic!”
