When Russian cops raided the apartment of Igor Gustev, they may have put a stop to 20 percent of the spam email being circulated in the world today. That seems kind of hard to believe. One guy? But Gustev is said to be the operator of a website called SpamIt.com .
The way that site allegedly worked was that Gustev recruited spammers through the site to send billions of spams to potential customers of Gustev's illegal online pharmacy. You know all those spams you get for Viagra that seem to link to a Canadian pharmacy? Allegedly, that's Gustev. He would supposedly cut the spammers in 40 percent on every sale they brought in.
But Gustev was being busted for the illegal pharmacy, NOT the spamming. He didn't send the actual spam. But the spammers he hired didn't send the spam either. Instead, they operated botnets to do the actual spamming for them. They would trick ordinary people into clicking on links that would give them malware and that malware would secretly take over the computer, turning it into a spam generator. So those spams you get? YOU might be the one sending them.

About 6 months ago, I kept getting replies from friends or co-workers on my Yahoo account mailing list on why I would send the a viagra add. Somehow, this canadian pharmacy have found away of using my e-mail address to send every one their adds. This is very embarring and now has caused problems at work. What can I do. Please Help!!
Sounds like your E-mail account has been compromised, or you picked up a virus, Steven.
Immediately have your computer checked for a 'bug' or 'bugs.' If you have the proper programs, do the scans yourself, if not you need to take your computer to some one who can.
Once it is clean of pests, install a firewall and an anti-virus program if you do not have one yet.
I strongly recommend a program for malware and adware also.
After you finish this, then go in and change your password, using a good strong one.
Also, check your account information and make sure no information was changed, if it was change it back immediately.
Then, you will have to inform your contacts that it was not you sending that mail, but they need to check their computers in case they were also infected.

SPAM Viagra / Canadian Pharmacy Emails To My Yahoo account?

I receive at least five emails a day from a never ending replicated email directing me to either a Viagra SPAM or one from "Canadian Pharmacy". My email spam filter never grabs these even though I indicate them as spam every time I receive one. I'm sure there are many others with this problem. Any input would be welcome. Thanks.
Thanks Lyn, good info ! The problem with the blocking the address, the email as being sent by me as well. It's hard to block that one :) This has been going on for awhile now.
You can not completely stop all spam, but you can help to put a big dent in it.
First, try not to open any of them, that only makes them send more and more to you.
Check mark them and click on 'Spam,' this should stop those addresses from being delivered to your inbox.
Use your spam guard and block address.
Look for the 'Options' link at upper right corner of mail screen and click on it
Options /mail options
Click on 'spam' in the list on the left.
Make sure spam guard is on, by checking in the little box.
Then in 'Blocked Email Addresses,' enter the E-mail address you wish blocked, in the box after 'Add a blocked address' and click on the 'add' button, then click on save changes at top left of screen.
You will never get mail from that address again.
This should help you to control your spam.
Other tips:
Do not ever open E-mail from people you do not know; and unless you are absolutely sure who it is from then treat them as spam.
Opening spam alerts the sender that your address is a valid one and they send you loads and loads more of it to you.
Never, ever give out your account information or other personal information to anyone.
If you are on a site and you absolutely have to sign up for something, check the entire page to make sure you uncheck any lines wanting to send you any other info, notices, catalogs, ads, and the like.
Added detail:
Yes, spammers change one item in their addresses a lot, so you might try blocking the entire domain, by putting in
*@ thedomainyouwanttoblock.com
for instance: *@seeyou.com
Or, if they change the domain, instead of the company name you can block the name by putting in Imatheft_inc@*

yeah, it's from MY account to all my contacts, and I'm my own contact, too. Whew, at least it's not just me. God it pisses me off though.
Yes, I got one from your mail account, and it was definitely my WTF moment of the week... Disappointing to know you hadn't really sent that too!

hi basicly my mate has just purchest some drugs from a so called canadian pharmacy (viagra) but on the packaging it says from india so i came on here to research and found that sometimes they lie and ship from other countrys ....so would like to know and if anybody has used this company befor as he is hell bent on using the drug

Well, they do state in the frequently asked questions that the drugs are often unregistered and manufactured in off shore zones etc. This is how they explain why they can produce the drug so cheaply. That to me is a red flag. Personally I'd be wary. I'm Canadian and I don't think when we buy perscription drugs here that they are being manufactured in India and are unregistered. I'm not sure drugs from other countries would meet our standards.
Try doing a search maybe through the Better Business Bureau of Canada, you might find something there. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
